Maybe bipolar depression works this way: the psyche suffers some injurious blow. Unable to repair itself, it is vulnerable to future injury. Periodically, in an attempt to heal (in much the same way that white blood cells are generated to fight invaders) the chemicals that produce mania flood the brain in an attempt to reverse this injury. It works briefly. But the recovery is not sustainable, and the injury remains. The pain is depression. Interesting idea, I think.
