Maybe there might be a positive theory of bipolar disorder. It could work this way: the "depression" period is like a dormant state. During this time, the brain gathers energy. Rather than suffer, one can experience the depression as a time of hibernation. The inevitable "manic" state is when the volcano erupts. Ideas flow forth with great force and heat and, as time passes, assume a solid state in which they can be studied and gathered. But it doesn't work that way. Manic periods are volcanic, but the ensuing depression, for me at least, makes me too sluggish to mine the ashes.
